Sentara School of Health Professions / Registered
Nursing Program (Diploma Nursing, LPN):"The Registered Nursing Program, Norfolk's
first Nursing School, began in 1892. It was
created by the Retreat of the Sick, a 24-bed
hospital. The two-year program, taught by
physicians, was open to any female, 18 or
older, with a grammar school education. The
schooling was free, but students had to supply
their own books and uniforms. Four young
women were accepted into the first class."
