Central Venous Catheter Complications Video, Food & Drug Administration:"This three part educational video can now be ordered from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS). A five minute preview is available as a streaming video presentation. The preview features Dr. Walter Scott of FDA discussing catheter tip location. This program follows "a day in the life" of two residents as they deal with the complications associated with the use of central venous catheters (CVCs). Surgical landmarks and underlying anatomy for CVC placement are reviewed. While assessing specific patient needs, they discuss catheter selection; patient preparation and positioning; vein vs. artery differentiation; and EKG monitoring. Radiology and pathology case reviews are presented. The importance of infection control and peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) use is presented, with a final note on home care."

American Association of Colleges of Nursing, Certification and Regulation of Advanced Practice Nurses:"Position Statement: The nursing profession must develop a standardized national advanced practice nursing certification process by the year 2000. Advanced Practice Nurse is an umbrella term appropriate for a licensed registered nurse prepared at the graduate degree level as either a Clinical Specialist, Nurse Anesthetist, Nurse-Midwife, or Nurse Practitioner. Advanced Practice Nurses are professionals with specialized knowledge and skills that are applied within a broad range of patient populations in a variety of practice settings (see Attachment A). All Advanced Practice Nurses should hold a graduate degree in nursing and be certified. Each existing and future professional nursing specialty certifying entity must meet uniform national standards when certifying nurses for advanced practice. Those standards would be developed and administered by a separate organization such as the American Board of Nursing Specialties. Professional certification validates and standardizes the qualifications and practice competencies of the Advanced Practice Nurse and is the appropriate mechanism by which the public's health and safety can be protected. There are nurses prepared at the advanced level who have roles as administrators and educators. This position statement does not address those individuals. Rather, it focuses on nurses prepared for roles as direct care providers."

Certified Nurse Midwife profession (CNM), MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia:"Nurse-midwifery in the United States dates back to 1925. At that time, Mary Breckenridge developed the Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky. The program used public health registered nurses, who had received additional nurse-midwifery education in England, to staff nursing centers in the Appalachian mountains. The centers offered family health care services in addition to childbearing and delivery care to residents within the region.
The first nurse-midwifery education program in the U.S. was founded in 1932 at the Maternity Center Association of New York City. The program enrolled public health nurses and awarded a certificate in nurse-midwifery to its graduates.
Today, all nurse-midwifery programs are within institutions of higher education. Approximately 70% of nurse-midwives graduate at the Master's degree level. These programs must be accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) in order for graduates to be eligible to take the National Certification Examination."

Certified Nurse-Midwives, Kids Into Health Careers:"Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are RNs with advanced training in midwifery that allows them to care for expectant mothers and to provide a range of clinical services for women. They examine women during pregnancy; manage labor; deliver infants; and after birth, care for the newborn and mother. Other duties include preventive health care, counseling, prescribing medication (most States), conducting clinical research, and teaching. All 50 States have recognized nurse-midwifery as a legal profession. Certified nurse-midwives may choose private practice or be employed in hospitals, independent birthing centers, or clinics. Hours will vary, although CNMs are usually on call and must be available to expectant mothers at all times."
